Working with Relocation Services - Self-Move Tips
A Self-Move means that you will acquire your own packing materials, and
arrange for people to help you load and unload the truck. If you are
working with Crye-Leike Relocation, contact your Personal Move Manager.
Crye-Leike will discuss your needs and put you in touch with the
authorized self-move dealer. You will make the reservation, and the bill
will come to Crye-Leike for payment, as a corporate benefit to you.
The following is a list of things the self-move company will provide,
in addition to the truck. (Be sure to check with your company's relocation
policy to see what items are covered.)
- Mover Truck - size depends on need
You will need to know how to drive the truck that you rent. Some companies
offer units with power steering and power brakes, others do not. An
automatic transmission may or may not be available. Remember that these
are real trucks, not modified cars. They handle differently than a car.
They have large blind spots, and are top heavy so they must be driven
slower and braking distances are longer. Also be aware of underpasses
and overhangs that do not normally pose problems to cars.
- Support Rental Item - for towing vehicle
When making your reservation please be sure to indicate if you have a
vehicle to be towed. Also indicate the make, year and model. This way
the self-move dealer can reserve the proper type of towing item.
- Utility, Furniture & Appliance Dollies & Furniture Pads -
for leverage & protection
Your rental dealer can supply you with items to help you make moving items
easier. These include dollies, which you place heavy items upon to give
you leverage, furniture pads for surface protection, and straps to tie
down the load. Bungee cables are not recommended. Also hand trucks may
be necessary to help move bulky and heavy items.
- Fuel:
Like rental cars, if you bring the truck back at
a lower gas level, the self-move company will charge for the amount of
gallons it takes for them to re-fuel. It is more cost effective for
you to fill it back up before you return it. Keep receipts
along the way when you fill up, and check with your company policy
regarding any potential reimbursement.
- Boxes, tape, mattress bags, mirror boxes are available but usually
this is an out-of-pocket cost to you. As soon as you
know you are moving, you may want to start accumulating packing materials
from various, cheaper sources.
- Deposit:
A deposit needs to be made to secure the reservation. If you are
working with Crye-Leike Relocation, you will NOT need to pay any
money out of your own pocket for a deposit; this is covered in the
agreement between Crye-Leike and the self-move company. Relocating with
your company can be fast and furious, so please be sure to reserve
the truck as soon as you are informed of your move, even if you do not
have the exact destination address. If the reservation is not made a
week or two in advance (at least!) then the possibility of a truck not
being available the days you need could occur. If this happens to you,
please contact your Crye-Leike Personal Move Manager, who will assist
you in ironing this out.
- Rental Insurance Protection:
Many times your homeowner or rental insurance protection may not protect
your household goods while in transit. You may wish to check with your
current insurance agent. Also ask your self-move dealer what protection
they can offer you for the rental period. Refer to your relocation
policy as often your company may have already agreed to pay the premium
for your temporary coverage. When you pick up your truck, review the
paperwork to see that the rental protection is included.
Remember that when you pick up your truck, the dealer will show you
everything you need to know. Do not be afraid to ask questions. |
